There’s something inherently "Halloween" about the ocean. It’s dark, it’s mysterious, and let’s face it, some of the stuff living down there is scarier than any slasher movie villain. When you move away from the standard jack-o'-lantern face and start looking at the textures of the sea, scales, tentacles, and armored shells, you open up a whole new world of artistic possibility.
Take the Mantis Shrimp, for example. In the wild, these things are nature's most colorful psychopathic ninjas. By manipulating these depths, we can create the illusion of a fish swimming right out of the gourd. The Tip: Use small pumpkins, gourds, or even pumpkin scraps to add 3D elements like "eyes," "tentacles," or "fins."
In our Mantis Shrimp sculpture (the hero image at the top!), we didn't just carve the eyes into the main pumpkin. We used two smaller, round pumpkins to create those iconic stalked eyes. By pinning them onto the main body with heavy-duty skewers, we achieved a level of depth that a single pumpkin simply can't provide.
You can do this at home, too! Carving an octopus? Use long, thin gourds for the tentacles. Making a sea monster? Use pumpkin seeds for the teeth. These "add-ons" are what separate the amateurs from the pros in the world of professional pumpkin sculpting.

- The Bleach Bath: After you’ve finished carving, give your pumpkin a soak in a mixture of one gallon of water and one teaspoon of bleach. This kills the bacteria that causes rot.
- The Moisture Barrier: Use petroleum jelly or a specialized pumpkin spray on the exposed flesh. This keeps the moisture in so the details don't dry out and shrivel.
- Keep it Cool: Pumpkins are like us: they don't like extreme heat. If you’re in Michigan, the October air usually does the trick, but if it’s a warm fall, keep your masterpiece in a cool, shaded spot (or even a fridge if you have the room!).
